China Culture and Story Time

China does not have a culture which values helping other civilians out. It is pretty much about getting ahead and push to get to the front faster than anyone else.

There is a famous case call Little Yue Yue in which a young child got away from her caretaker and was struck by a delivery van. The driver looked out saw the child and then proceeded to roll over her a second time. Everyone looked and walked around and a 2nd truck struck her.

The cultural norm has developed to harden and get used to ignoring suffering and let someone else take responsibility.

Going back many centuries China has been a difficult place with limited resources and too many mouths to feed. So people harden up and ignore the pain and suffering around them and just hold onto what they have. This becomes the norm whether necessary or not.

There is also no Good Samaritan law in China so citizens may be scared they might be sued or face charges or costs or somehow be impacted by taking action, so easier and safer just to avoid it.

Just the other day I was on my way home and some guy was blocking traffic by laying on the hood of a car. He was clearly intoxicated making a scene. The driver of the car could not move so the guy just laid there. At first, I thought the guy was pretending to be hurt and wait for the police to come so he could get money from the driver by scamming him.

Me being me I stopped and took photos of him laying on the car. He saw me taking the photo and then came over to me and put his hands on the handle bar of my scooter. He was holding it down and would not let go. At first, I thought it was funny okay haha now let go. But he refused he was so wasted leaning all his weight on my scooter (he was at least 250 pounds).

It got real very quickly when I noticed he had just taken the keys out of my scooter and was about to put them in his pocket. I got lucky and was able to snatch them out of his hands quickly. This is when I knew it was serious. My friend called the police and as all this was happening 30-40 people were surrounding myself and this clearly intoxicated guy.

NO ONE was helping me. I was seriously stuck. I was asking for help from people and everyone just starred at me. It was crazy. I felt insane. I could not hit him or push him off myself scooter because if  I did there would be a serious chance I would get in trouble for hitting him. I just had to wait it out until the cops came.

This went on for about 15 minutes of him not letting go until he started to dry heave like he was about to puke. Then some people tried to help drag him off thank god. and we managed to get him off. After that, this guy grabbed a beer bottle and tried to hit some one. the cops came took him in cuffs and I had to go to the police station to give a statement. It was a wild night.

Anyways that is my personal story of dealing with people looking on as something bad was happening. It is very hard to imagine but there is as serious culture here of not getting involved in something.
